Knitting Project Two--Washcloth

I finished this a while ago, and just now got around to taking pictures.

This was another good practice piece as it combines a variety of stitches.  I don't remember the link, but if you just search for "knitted washcloth pattern" it will come up with lots of options.

The eyelets were done with a combination of yarn-overs and then decreases done by knitting two together.  The middle parts are done with stockinette and reverse stockinette, if I remember right. 

You start at a corner, increasing each row until the middle, then decreasing.

Especially for You

This is not my artwork.

Our school/employer did a fundraiser event for Especially for You, which provides free mammograms and medical care for women in need in the community.

My husband volunteered for the airbrushed "tattoo," but he was wearing a long-sleeve shirt with a tie, so the only place he could think of was the top of his head.

He let the artist have free rein, and spent the rest of the day looking like this, which amused and impressed his students.  I'm so proud of him!  I am also proud of our school, ITT-Tech, for being willing to support this event.



Notice the pink tie too. All the staff was asked to wear pink. He had to borrow the tie from our son.

Measuring a Child

I am near the completion phase of a project, but I wanted to double-check the measurements, so I sent the following to my daughter-in-law so she could measure my grandson for me. 

If printed on an 8.5x11 inch sheet of paper, with no margins, the ruler should be accurate.

As it turned out, two things happened before she got this printed:

1. She went to a fabric store and got a measuring tape.
2. I went to a store and found a similar item in the same size and measured it.

If I had thought of that first, I wouldn't have gone to all the effort.  But I did, so I decided to share it in case it helps someone else.

Now I just need to finish up the project, which I will post when I am done, before I send it to him.

Make a Note of This

Our stake president, Paul Johnson, recently said in a talk that we should always have a little notebook or paper with us.  If we feel inspired or have thoughts come to us about something, we should write them down before they go away.

In keeping with this theme, Donetta decided to give each of our young women a little notebook for going back to school. She chose the word "Believe" from our 13th Article of Faith, which is our theme for the year. Each girl also received a pencil with one of the value words on it. 

I hope they will each keep them handy in their backpack or purse and make good use of them.  You never know when inspiration may come and the thoughts of your heart are clarified.

A New Time in My Life

My life and my mindset is changing. Today is truly a new day, every hour different and new from what it has been before.  In celebration, I recreated an old clock for my living room.

I had this old clock, which was cute in the 80's but is faded and dated, though the clockwork still works.  It's been in a box, with no battery, for a year.

My living room is a mix of old and new, with an antique barber chair and trunk combined with a modern love-seat and chair, and lots of black and white for bookshelves, accents, and curtains.  In keeping with this theme, I decided to create a retro/modern clock.

I reused the face and clockworks from the old clock to create the clock below for my living room. I bought a record at a thrift shop and used an outdated software cd for the middle.  Total cost: $1 for the record, plus one new AA battery. I had to drill the hole in the record a little bigger to accommodate the clock post, but otherwise it was easy to do.

The key is to take the clock apart piece by piece, laying out the hands and little nuts and washers in the order they are to go back on.  I then cleaned the old face and the CD thoroughly before putting them together. A few dabs of E6000 glue keeps the CD from slipping down since its hole is bigger than the post.
